Mastering Stakeholder Management
Sharing our guided exercise to create your own Stakeholder Map
Hello CTOs,
Now that we’ve launched The Maverick CTO, we are also going to share some of the content we regularly share with our CTOs. First… stakeholder management. Our first gift to you is our guide on Stakeholder Management, how you create your own Stakeholder Map – and use it to influence your stakeholder.

🤲 Nothing we do in tech is in isolation. Technology hits every part of our business, from marketing and sales to finance. For everything we do, we need to be sure our stakeholders are aligned. We often forget, or we don’t know how.
In this guide, I’ve written down how I do it. Every time I start a new initiative or plan, I start with a stakeholder map. You would often hear me ask: “who needs to make a decision on this?” or “who’s interested in this project?”.
In this guide, we will walk you through the process of creating a stakeholder map, an essential tool for visualizing and strategizing your stakeholder engagement efforts. We will cover:
Identifying Stakeholders: Learn how to identify the key individuals and groups who have a vested interest in your organization’s strategy and the power to influence its outcome.
Plotting the Stakeholder Map: Understand how to plot stakeholders based on their level of interest and influence, and how to use color coding to indicate their current perception of your team, project or initiative.
Engaging Stakeholders: Discover best practices for involving stakeholders throughout your strategic process to build buy-in, gather valuable input, and foster a collaborative environment.

Why?
Why am I giving this away for free? Ever since work started on The Maverick CTO, I’ve started to write down a lot of my experience. It’s coming along slowly. I haven’t yet decided how & where I’m going to use it. It will certainly be part of the Maverick CTO community when we open it up later this year. For now, I’m just happy to share this with anyone who needs it.
If you’re a CTO or Tech Leader, your leadership journey is ongoing, and I am here to support you every step of the way. Stay connected for additional resources, tips, and insights to help you on your path. Feel free to reach out with any questions, share your successes, or seek guidance. I’d love to hear how you found this guide, and how building your Stakeholder Map and Plan has changed how you run your work and your projects. Let me know!
Embarking on a leadership journey requires courage, dedication, and a clear vision. By completing this guide, you have demonstrated you clearly possess these. As you continue your path, remember that every step builds on the previous. What seems like a big leap right now will seem simple in 2-3 years’ time.
Thank you for allowing me to be part of your journey. I truly look forward to seeing all the incredible things you will achieve.
Kind regards,
Mark Wormgoor
